Rural

Already into April and we are in the middle of a spring snow fall. Sidewalks and streets are now covered in a blanket of white, the chill of winter has settled back in.

I’ve been working with some footage, inverting and layering images from my last shoot in my hometown. It reminds me of all the love I have for that space, but on another level represents my complicated relationship with my rural upbringing. Hometown images that are familiar against the flat white background of winter, are now inverted and layered together to create a landscape that feels detached and disorientating.

Kami

It’s a great thing to collaborate and find a creative flow with another artist, and that’s exactly what happened when I worked with Kami Goertz. I spent the afternoon with her and found a window into her unique approach to textile art and recorded her creative process. So thankful when something like this clicks. Her creations are unique and all kinds of adorable. We had fun, we made art together and now we have a short little doc from this creative afternoon (and it’s below for you to see)

Last week I collaborated with local maker Kami Goertz, an incredible textile artist whose work is so unique and detailed. I took some time on a sunny afternoon, filmed her creative process and I’m really happy with how it turned out. Here are some screenshots from that shoot! I’ll post the completed piece once I finish the final edit.

Studio time

I was at my studio on Sunday organizing and cataloging some of my work, and I couldn’t resist taking a few pics with my new Canon DSLR. I can remotely connect it to my phone, hence the pic of me holding my phone. I always enjoy being in my creative space, it’s energizing with all the sunshine and it’s fun to look back through my collection of art. Hope everyone is having a good start to your week.

Prussian Blue

This monochromatic piece was done in Prussian blue and I’m just so happy with this. The tone, hues and the variation from one colour are extraordinary. Excited to work with this colour more.

Portrait Pink

Such a simple colour, but the hue is so nice. I love this pink. I was playing around with portrait pink and aqua green and created this little graphic. 16×20 in acrylic.

Sat down at my canvas with no plan, and I am so pleased with how this one turned out.

Downtown Mood

Something so moody about the city after a rainfall, especially in black and white. A bit unusual since it’s January but we will take it. It will be snow and -35 soon enough.

Studio life ~ Looking Back

2020 has come to a close and here we are on the very first day of 2021. The past year was marked with creative highs and personal lows and the one thing that remained constant and familiar was my art studio. I wanted to share some shots of my space from this past year, to celebrate the time that has passed and to look forward to working more in this art space.

I hope everyone has a creative and cozy start to the new year. I’m going to make another cup of coffee, read a bit of my book and then venture down to my second home, my art studio.

Headspace in Acrylic

It’s been a different season here in Manitoba currently in Code Red. Normally a vibrant season with friends and family, social gatherings and gift exchanges, we are now isolated and limited to the contact we can have. The seasonal feeling is muted and contemplative this year. I’m so grateful for my creative outlet and artistic expression, it’s been a saving grace in these uncertain times.

This is a new piece that I completed and I’m very happy with it. Colours I don’t usually work with and a style that I should do more often. Acrylic in burnt umber and yellow hues, this piece feels like my headspace right now. Stormy, full of thoughts and soft with colour.

Dioxazine Purple

THIS colour is so awesome, I love how dense it is and how it has such a big tonal range. I work in monochromatic often, so I am genuinely in love with this purple and how is works on the canvas. A few examples of some work this week with the dioxazine purple.
