Studio/2022

My studio is located in the heart of downtown Winnipeg, in the historic Exchange District. The area is a hub for restaurants, galleries and all things arts related. Some nights the area is full with the hustle and sounds of people moving through the streets and sidewalks. Other nights it is a ghost town. No matter what the mood, I love being perched up on the 4th floor of my building listening, seeing and absorbing all the eclectic energy. It engages my creativity, being in this neighbourhood and I look forward to spending 2022 here in my studio.

Sunday Sunrise

I got up early on Sunday (around 5:30am) to get my butt out the door and take some sunrise photos. I was a bit resistant when I initially got up, but a bit of coffee and the brisk morning air got me going. The sky was a bit cloudy but it felt so good to run around the quiet streets and the empty sidewalks getting some great shots. I’ve attached a few pictures from my morning 🙂

Suburbs

Overlayed footage from a sunny afternoon sometime in July. As fall gets cooler and gloomier, it’s fun to look back on footage that I’ve shot and revisit warmer times.

Abstract and Colours

Two pieces I finished the other night. After a long (tiring) day, I settled in at my studio and without any intent, began painting. I did not know what colours I wanted to work with, or how my flow was going to go. Started with a base colour of Thalo Green and I just started painting.

Sometimes that’s what we need to do. No intention, just the room to let creativity work itself onto the canvas.

I’m very happy with how these two pieces turned out, and it’s was the best and most relaxing way to finish up my day.

Finally giving my studio a much needed refresh. New writing desk, new work table and chairs are making things so much more inviting. The space is feeling really good so I wanted to share a pic as I switch things up. As I get everything in its place, I’ll post up more pics.

This place is where all my creativity comes together and I’m so happy to share this with everyone.

Drifting

Memories always drifting through my mind.

I love how film and video work is my main outlet for creative expression. Whether straightforward documentary-style or video collage, the medium has always been a great source of satisfaction as an artist.

Originally shot as vacation video, I’m reworking the footage to create a short that captures the fading and degrading memories we hold close. Places and people that were sharp and clear, are now blended and lost in a dull hum that spreads through the back of my mind.

New work

A recent piece in acrylic, “untitled” 18×24. Was really nice to back on a canvas, blending Viridian green and soft white together to create a cool flow of colour and texture.

Learning Curve

Finally got my hands on a Dji Pro RSC 2, and I’m having a lot of fun with it. It handles so well, and the shots are SO smooth. I’m still practicing and learning with it, but so far all the footage looks mint. I’m also glad that my husband Bren is willing to be my stand-in *heart*

Cameron

I sat down with Cameron Denby, Marimba | Percussionist to document his creative process as a performer. We had a great afternoon talking about art and how we interact with people through our medium, and I was able to capture a very cool and intimate performance.

I always enjoy working with other artists and talking about why we do what we love. Cameron was genuine and so talented, I am always grateful for this kind of collaboration and the chance to document an artistic process.

My Winnipeg

Winnipeg is a place I call home, and always a source of creative inspiration. From the train yards to the city skyline, I am always downtown and walking my familiar routes. I snapped these photos and layered them together, taking what is familiar to me and creating something that is unfamiliar…metal blends into metal and the skyline melts into itself.
