Hometown Fever Dream II

More work based around mirroring and inverting images. This work represents a struggle with dissociation, and the push and pull of rural and cultural identity. All of these shots are stills from a longer video piece entitled “Hometown Fever Dream”

Hometown Fever Dream

Excerpt from a longer piece that builds on the thematic play of dissociation, recovery and cultural identity.

*2 years ago I recorded the alarm system going off in a parkade. It was eerie, foreboding and I loved it. I held onto that sample and was FINALLY able to use it…so satisfying to rediscover audio and find a proper home for it*

Arlington Bridge

Sometimes all it takes is seeing something from a different perspective to understand it’s creative potential. This was was so relaxing to film and cut together. The longer edit includes driving through residential streets and through our downtown area, once I finish it up I will post it.

Kaleidiscope

Slow Sunday here today, spent some time reviewing and editing footage, creating short pieces that carry the hazy recollection of memories.  The feeling when you try and recall a moment and all you can find are the shapes and sounds of where you used to be.

Rorschach

I was at my studio last night and I was editing some footage, layering and collaging images together and this sequence really stood out to me.  I love how layering a sequence together can really speak to a specific state of mind. Last night i was feeling introspective, and this short piece speaks to that headspace.

Revisiting Works

It’s important to reflect and review your past work as an artist.  Reflection leads to deeper insights that you may have not seen at the time you were working on the piece.  It’s easy to forget about the work you have completed (or not completed), but to return is cathartic, and often inspiring.  This piece is from 2009, repetitious and droning.  I remember this afternoon clearly.  And now I can see how that style has been a thread through all of my work.

Poetry of a moment

I was able to film my mother as she recited one her beautiful poems.  I wanted the short project to be a document of her work and it all came together so nicely.  Channeling my art and creativity into the ones who are close to me is so satisfying.  Excited for more collabs!

The Beekeeper

Repost. One of my favourite things to do is collaborate with my Partner. This is a short I did with him a few years back. I love watching this, and how he works. It was such a warm evening in June and I loved every minute, capturing this moment with him.

Preserves

Recently I spent the afternoon with Bren and collected footage of him canning in his kitchen, making curried apple chutney. I’m always interested in the process, and how things come to fruition, so this seemed like an ideal collaboration. I love working with people that I know, there is something so relaxed about the creative process, and the end result with Bren turned out better than I expected.
