Headspace in Acrylic

It’s been a different season here in Manitoba currently in Code Red. Normally a vibrant season with friends and family, social gatherings and gift exchanges, we are now isolated and limited to the contact we can have. The seasonal feeling is muted and contemplative this year. I’m so grateful for my creative outlet and artistic expression, it’s been a saving grace in these uncertain times.

This is a new piece that I completed and I’m very happy with it. Colours I don’t usually work with and a style that I should do more often. Acrylic in burnt umber and yellow hues, this piece feels like my headspace right now. Stormy, full of thoughts and soft with colour.

Sovereign Intimacies II

I’ve been working with a local gallery, the Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, documenting and recording their current show. The end result, a short document that will be used for online platforms and in a University setting to explore the themes and complexity of the installation.

We are in the final lap, video has been recorded and now we have to finish our audio on December 4th.

The process has been different to navigate with Covid-19. I’m so used to just jumping in, but this has required a whole new style of creative navigation. Here are some screenshots from the final cut. It’s just so nice to look at and gives me all the warm feelings of creative satisfaction.

Sovereign Intimacies

I’ve been spending some time at the Plug In art gallery, collecting footage and working with the curators of this amazing gallery installation “ Sovereign Intimacies”. Such a beautiful show, the artwork is incredible. Here’s a few snap shots from the other day.

Portrait Pink: Gouache

I’m accustomed to watercolour, but sometimes I venture into gouache territory. I love that gouache has the flexibility of watercolour and the same vibe, so it always feels familiar when I’m on the paper with it. More over I love the opaqueness of the finished product. This piece was done in portrait pink, so a very light tone, and gouache really suits it! The textures are incredible and I love how the light pink doesn’t fade away.

Hometown Fever Dream

Excerpt from a longer piece that builds on the thematic play of dissociation, recovery and cultural identity.

*2 years ago I recorded the alarm system going off in a parkade. It was eerie, foreboding and I loved it. I held onto that sample and was FINALLY able to use it…so satisfying to rediscover audio and find a proper home for it*

Colour Study in Red

Playing around with watercolour in red, getting a feel for heavier textures and varying brushstrokes. Really happy with the creative exercise and the end result.

Arlington Bridge

Sometimes all it takes is seeing something from a different perspective to understand it’s creative potential. This was was so relaxing to film and cut together. The longer edit includes driving through residential streets and through our downtown area, once I finish it up I will post it.
